Frequently Asked Questions

What makes hemp sustainable?

Hemp is a renewable resource that is beginning to gain traction in multiple applications, including in the paper and textile industries. In comparison to other products used for animal bedding or garden mulch, hemp’s benefits far outweigh other common options.

Hemp has a growth period of roughly 85-120 days and is, therefore, a better renewable resource for animal bedding than traditional wood chips. Hemp is naturally pest resistant, and it easily grows without the use of pesticides or herbicides. It is also relatively drought resistant, making it easy to grow during hot, dry summers without the use of additional watering. Hemp is being studied for its ability to revitalize and remediate damaged soils. Furthermore, hemp has low carbon emissions, and it also sequesters carbon from the atmosphere.

Our hemp is 100% Canadian.

What makes your eggs so special?

We are proud of the eggs produced by our hens. Our birds are permitted to free-range in the outdoors for as much of the calendar year as possible. This allows them to self-select vegetation and insects that enrich their diet and contribute to nutritious eggs.

Because we raise a variety of heritage breeds, our hens lay eggs in a variety of colours, from white, to green, to blue, to various shades of brown.

Our eggs are sold unwashed, meaning that the natural bloom (coating) on the egg is uncompromised; you can therefore store our eggs at room temperature for at least a couple of weeks, or you may choose to refrigerate them, in which case they will likely store well for a couple of months.

Our eggs are not graded, and so they will come in different sizes. If you would like to sign up for a seasonal egg subscription, please contact us for availability and pricing.

What kinds of fruits and vegetables do you sell, and how can I buy them?

We offer a range of seasonal fruits and vegetables, all grown on our micro-farm.

As a small operation, we are not equipped to produce large quantities of any particular item. We focus on growing crops that you are less likely to find at the supermarket or local produce stands.

The bulk of our produce is available from July to September. In addition to fruits and vegetables, we also sell edible flowers. Currently, you can purchase our produce at our farm stand.

Is your honey pasteurized?

Our honey is raw and unpasteurized, which means it retains all of its healthy and natural properties.

What are the benefits of burning beeswax candles?

Beeswax candles burn cleanly, and they naturally filter airborne impurities, like dust, moulds, odours and other toxins. Beeswax candles are all natural, with no added colours or fragrances, and they burn longer and brighter than traditional paraffin or soy candles.

Do you offer CSA box subscriptions?

We currently do not offer CSA box subscriptions, although we hope to be able to create some kind of local fruit and veggie box subscription in the coming years, as we grow and develop a client base.

Do you offer tax exemptions for Indigenous peoples with status cards?

First Nation individuals with a status card, bands and band councils of an Ontario First Nations reserve are eligible for a point-of-sale rebate from paying the 8% Ontario portion of the HST for qualifying off-reserve purchases. Yes, we are happy to offer tax exemptions for individuals with Indian status cards. Please contact us directly via sales@fancyfarmerettes.ca so that we can accommodate you.
